Tehmina Janjua appointed as a new foreign secretary on Monday

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister of Pakistan Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has appointed Tehmina Janjua, as the new Foreign Secretary in Geneva. She is presently serving as Pakistan’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) in Geneva. She is the first women appointed to the foreign office.

According to the foreign office statement issued on Monday that Ms. Tehmina Janjua would assume the charge of Foreign Secretary in the first week of March 2017.

She joined the Foreign Service in 1984. She is seasoned diplomat with a career spanning over 32 years. She has rich experience of working in multilateral diplomacy both at Headquarters and Missions abroad. She also served as Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs during 2011.

She holds Master’s degrees from Quaid e Azam University Islamabad and Columbia University.

Janjua replaces Aizaz Chaudhary as a foreign secretary, who was appointed in 2013.Aizaz is a career diplomat who joined the Foreign Service in 1980. He was also involved in the peace process with India as a DG of South Asia Desk at the Foreign Office.
